The venue was an unusual one for an idol concert, but it was a great way to close the summer. The tickets came in the form of admission bracelets and buyable tickets to be traded in for nearly everything there, from the concert at the open air amphitheatre to anything surrounding it, including a vast array of game booths, snack vendors, and carnival rides. There were themed roller coasters, teacup rides, and a massive Ferris wheel that made the theme abundantly clear, along with a massive banner by the entrance:
Welcome to Wonderland!
Playful instrumentals played over the loudspeakers as you walked down the paths, covered in swirls, stripes, dots, and rings of vivid chalk. Signs pointed not only to rides and booths, but also to:
The Hatter and Hare’s Tea Party, a long, green and yellow concession stand with drinks and snacks,
The Cheshire Cat’s tree, a spiral staircase with benches at every landing, decorated with leaves and fake bark,
And the Queen of Hearts’ castle, where one could buy souvenirs, bedecked with emblems representing the original literary characters.
The entrance to the stage looked like you were passing into a hole between the oversized roots of a gigantic pine tree, and the stage was rimmed by oversized flowers of all sorts, a band doing a sound check dressed in floral print and clothes resembling massive blossoms.
Once everyone was seated and the lights went down, an announcer stating that the show was about to begin, there was a slam of doors in the back. The boys entered, and those near the back could hear them chattering away about what they think the show will be, how much they loved the rides and souvenirs, check out my t-shirt! Then, stagehands with card suits and numbers pinned to their clothes came out, handing them each a microphone.
“Whoa, ok, uh. Guess we’re emceeing? Hey, friends and foes, what’s up?” Osomatsu waves, the White Rabbit taking the lead as he should.
“Osomatsu, what kind of introduction is that?!” Choromatsu says with a jab of his rather pointy elbow that almost knocks the tiny top hat off of his head.
“Look, I have no idea what’s going on, what am I supposed to do?!” Osomatsu rubs at his arm, pouting at someone seated near the back for sympathy.
Jyuushimatsu raises a hand, and doesn’t say a thing until Osomatsu calls on him. “I think we should ask somebody.” He’s already bouncing like a hare should.
“Who are we going to ask?” Ichimatsu says, adjusting his Cheshire cat headband. “The stagehands are already gone.”
Todomatsu sighs, messing with the netting attached to his crown. “I guess we’re on improv duty too. This is all really weird, isn’t it?”
Karamatsu is already walking down the center aisle to the stage, and no one catches him until he climbs up the stairs to center stage. “All of us are lost in this marvellous Wonderland– you can naturally leave it to Alice to lead you home!” He holds out his microphone, and gets a cheer back. “Whoever is intending to perform on this stage, reveal yourself to us!”
The screens above the stage flicker on, and two figures are silhouetted from behind.
“It’s you, genius.”
Karamatsu freezes in his place. “…Ibegyourpardon?”
“You can’t just dress as main characters and expect to slip by unnoticed.”
“Leave it to you stupid sextuplets to not figure it out!”
The two are illuminated from the front at last– Totoko and Nyaa, in nearly matching queen costumes.
“The Red Queen, Yowai Totoko!”
“And the White Queen, Hashimoto Nyaa.”
The others slowly, hesitantly walk to the stage.
“So… no MC stuff?”
“None whatsoever!” Totoko yells. “You’re my charges, and you’re making me look bad.”
Nyaa snickers, “Hopefully they can adjust quickly! Today, you six are the performers, and I suggest you get to it before the Wonderlanders get testy.”
“If you don’t make it happen, you’re banished from the Red Kingdom from this day forward!”
“Waitwaitwait,” Choromatsu says, before remembering who Totoko and Nyaa were seemingly playing, show some respect, bow, bow. “Your Majesty, what do you need us to do?”
“My citizens haven’t seen a good show since Nyaa and I have ascended to the throne. They’re dying for a good show!” She jabs her scepter towards the crowd. “Isn’t that right, kingdom of Red?!” The audience shouts.
Osomatsu grins up at the screen, saying “So, what’s in it for us if we do it the best we can?” despite Choromatsu’s confusion over how quickly he agreed.
“I don’t know, um. Free churros?” Nyaa offers.
Choromatsu immediately stops yelling.
“Get in your places, subjects! Hurry up and perform. I’m not losing this game to White!”
“Best of luck, sextuplets. Don’t bore me!”
Jyuushimatsu is talking to some of the musicians around the stage, shaking hands with one of the members of the string quartet.
“Jyuushimatsu-niisan, what are you doing?” Todomatsu asks.
“I’ve always wanted to do this!” Jyuushimatsu shouts as he puts down his big bucket of popcorn. Before anyone can ask, he points backstage, “Lights!” He begins waving like actual, trained conductor, and the string section plays a familiar tune.
((For a sound reference, please listen to Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku’s song Haitateki! Content Warning for a ghostly mouth getting some tooth damage.))
The others watch on, Osomatsu and Ichimatsu jokingly waving around as they get in their places. The song’s content is as much a plea to be heard by the person they love as it is to stay alive. They’re not afraid of embarrassment, they’re afraid of the pain of rejection, and they’re honestly just trying to keep their head on their shoulders.
They’re showing even more coordination than they were last summer, moving through formations with ease, matching each other’s energy instead of doing as they please, nervously smiling up at the emblems of red and white, the color coded spades pulsing with every beat.
The song ends, and the queens appear on the screens once more.
“You know what?” Nyaa says, leaning on the edge of the screen, chin in hand. “Your jesters aren’t too bad!”
Todomatsu frowns immediately, “Excuse me, jesters?”
Karamatsu mutters, arms crossing, “I’m a bard, Your Majesties.”
“I know, right?” Totoko says, waving them off. “So funny! So dippy.”
“Absolutely.” Nyaa grins, and she and Totoko turn to the camera. “Let’s watch them finish a whole set!”
Totoko and Nyaa walk to the center screen. “Let the Farewell Summer, Hello Wonderland concert officially begin!” The camera pans up, the logo overtaking the screen entirely, lights sweeping the stage in all the colors the dedicated light crew has.
