In
the early hours of my efforts to #savechoromatsu, I desperately clung
to the faint hope that the allegations against Chris Niosi were
simply an example of Tumblr culture’s eagerness to use the word
“abuse” as a synonym for “mistakes” or “conflict”, and
even after I reluctantly let that hope slip away, I was too proud to
admit I might have been acting out of blind faith in those who claim
to have survived abuse. I am deeply regretful to learn that that actually has been the case.

Last
night a long time friend of Chris’s, who wishes to remain
anonymous, told me their side of the story via Twitter DMs: the truth
of the matter is that a smear campaign some of Chris’s former
friends started in excessive retaliation for a forgivable mistake
worked far too well. When that campaign reached me and Tumblr user
@askidolmatsus/Twitter user modclooooover, we acted on our drilled-in
instinct to take abuse survivors at their word – including on the
fact that what they experienced was, in fact, abuse. In the future, we will exercise even more critical thinking when it comes allegations like these.

The
lengthy, detailed story presented to me tells me that Chris Niosi has
not done anything even remotely punishable by the loss of a
job. Clover and I accept full responsibility for spreading the
attempt to tarnish his name, and we wish to extend our sincerest
apologies to Chris, his friends, and Viz Media. We had good intentions, but know
that does not excuse the damage already done – for Chris’s sake,
we hope we succeed in our efforts to control that damage and spread
the truth.

I’ve been messaging everyone who interacted with my original post one by one, but I’ve run out of private messages for today and asks for the last two hours. Once I get through everyone there, I’ll be deleting the posts I’ve put in the savechoromatsu tag. I’m going to continue that as soon as I can get more asks out, but.

For now, I want to post this here and make sure it’s absolutely clear.

I wanted to spread the message of people who i thought where victims of serious abuse. I’ll still prioritize the stories of victims, and speak up for them until I can no longer speak, but I’ll be a bit more judicious in my research in the future.

I sincerely want to apologize to the people and businesses mentioned above, to Chris, his friends, and @vizmediaofficial (who, I will admit, I’ve been @ -ing pretty irresponsibly. My bad, my apologies.), and I truly wish everyone all the best.

I can’t undo the mistakes I’ve made, but I can try to turn it around and make amends.

I’ll still be sending messages out as soon as I have the chance to do so. Curse and bless tumblr message/ask limits. (Is the Fan Mail feature still a thing? should I even…?)
